Interoception
Interoception is the nervous system's sensing, interpretation, and integration of signals from within the body. It includes information connected with heartbeat, breathing, hunger, thirst, temperature, pain, and internal tension. Some of this processing becomes a conscious sensation; much of it does not. The term names a sensory process, not a diagnosis or ability score.
What interoception means
Interoception is the processing of signals that describe the body's internal condition. It covers the nervous system's receipt and interpretation of information related to organs, tissues, and physiological balance. A person may consciously notice a pounding heart or thirst, while other internal regulation continues without entering awareness.
The term can refer to several stages: an internal change, the nervous system carrying information about it, the brain integrating that information, and the sensation that reaches awareness. Those stages do not always line up neatly. A heartbeat can change without being noticed, and a noticed sensation can be difficult to locate or describe.
Interoception has a narrow and a broad use. Some researchers reserve it for signals from the viscera, such as the heart and gut. Others use it for a wider representation of bodily condition that includes temperature, pain, itch, or muscular effort. A source's stated definition shows which boundary applies.
Which sensations can be interoceptive
Common interoceptive sensations include heartbeat, breath, hunger, fullness, thirst, temperature, nausea, pain, bladder pressure, and muscle tension. The list is broader than sensations from the stomach or heart because current definitions often include signals from several bodily systems. Researchers still specify narrower definitions when their question requires one.
Internal signals differ in how clearly they appear. Hunger may build gradually, a skipped heartbeat may feel sudden, and body temperature may be noticed only when it moves outside a comfortable range. Interoception names the sensing across these examples; it does not imply that every signal is equally noticeable or accurately interpreted.
The mechanism that makes a body-signal tile meaningful is interoception: the sensation must become available to notice. The Anxious body-signal list includes a tight chest, knotted stomach, shallow breathing, restless legs, and dry mouth. Those cues may accompany anxious feelings, but each also has other possible contexts and causes.
Where the idea comes from
The word interoception traces to physiologist Charles Sherrington's 1906 distinction between signals arising inside the body, signals about movement and position, and signals from the external environment. Later researchers expanded the concept beyond the viscera, and its exact boundary remains an active matter of definition rather than a settled anatomical list.
A. D. Craig's 2002 review described interoception as the sense of the body's physiological condition. More recent work often treats it as a process involving the sensing, interpretation, and integration of internal signals. That broader account includes both conscious sensations and processing that does not become conscious.
Interoception papers can examine quite different bodily channels. A heartbeat-detection study, a paper about hunger, and a review of the felt body may share the term while studying different parts of it. The task and working definition show whether a result concerns one signal, conscious perception, or the wider internal-sensing process.
How body signals relate to feelings
Body signals can help distinguish emotional experiences, but they do not carry fixed emotion labels. A quickened heartbeat may occur with fear, excitement, exertion, caffeine, or illness. Interoception provides information about the body's state; context, attention, memory, and interpretation contribute to whether that information is experienced or named as a feeling.
This is why the same sensation can sit beside different entries on the wheel. Warmth might accompany affection, embarrassment, anger, or a hot room. The sensation is evidence about the body, not a code that translates automatically into one emotion.
Emotional granularity concerns how finely someone distinguishes emotional experiences. Interoceptive signals can be part of the evidence used to make those distinctions, alongside the situation and thoughts. Affect labeling is the act of putting an emotion into words. Neither concept is another name for internal sensing.
What interoception is confused with
Interoception differs from exteroception, which concerns the outside world, and proprioception, which concerns body position and movement. It also differs from emotion: an internal sensation can contribute to an emotional experience without being an emotion itself. Body awareness is a broader everyday phrase and may include all three sensory domains.
Touch can make the boundary less tidy. Feeling fabric against skin is exteroceptive because the source is outside the body, while noticing warmth, itch, or pain concerns bodily condition. Researchers may classify edge cases differently, so a source's working definition matters more than treating the categories as perfectly sealed.
Interoception is also broader than heartbeat perception. Heartbeat tasks are common in research because they offer a bounded signal to study, but performance on one task does not describe how a person senses hunger, breath, temperature, or the gut. One measure should not be treated as a complete portrait of the sense.
How to describe an internal sensation
A clear description separates the sensation from the feeling word and the guessed cause. "My chest feels tight" records a body sensation; "I feel anxious" names an emotion; "the meeting caused it" proposes an explanation. Keeping those statements distinct preserves uncertainty when several interpretations are possible.
Concrete details can include location, intensity, rhythm, temperature, pressure, and when the sensation began. "Fluttering low in my stomach since breakfast" preserves more information than "something feels wrong." The goal is an accurate record of the moment, not a verdict about what the sensation proves.
A feelings-wheel check-in can pair a chosen emotion with what you noticed in your body. Notes can preserve the wording, while context and tags can record what was happening around it. These records describe an experience; they do not measure interoceptive ability or establish a cause.
What the term cannot tell you
Interoception does not explain why a sensation is present, prove which emotion it belongs to, or determine whether someone has a condition. A single missed or noticed signal also cannot summarize a person's interoception. The term is most accurate when it describes internal sensing without turning that description into an assessment.
An unusual sensation deserves to be considered on its own terms rather than assigned to an emotion because it appears on a feelings page. Emotional context may be relevant, but it cannot rule out a physical explanation. The word interoception describes how internal information is processed, not what any specific symptom means.

What is a simple example of interoception?
Noticing that your mouth feels dry and identifying thirst is a simple example of conscious interoception. The internal signal becomes a sensation you can report. Other interoceptive processing helps regulate the body without becoming a clear, nameable experience.
Is interoception the same as body awareness?
Body awareness is a broad everyday phrase. It may include internal sensations, awareness of posture and movement, and information gained through touch or vision. Interoception refers specifically to the processing of the body's internal condition, though researchers differ on exactly where its boundary lies.
Can interoception tell me which emotion I am feeling?
